The Virginia Board of Social Work requires minimum continuing education as follows: For licensed clinical social workers, 30 contact hours of approved education every two years; for licensed social workers, 15 contact hours every two years. Statutes require that continuing education must be from approved sources such as ASWB (Association of Social Work Boards) or NAADAC (The Association for Addiction Professionals). Addiction specialists in the Commonwealth of Virginia are credentialed by two separate bodies. The Board of Counseling oversees the issuance of the LSATP (Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner) license. 20 hours of Board-approved courses are required for each annual renewal cycle. Statutes require that continuing education must be from approved sources such as NBCC (National Board of Certified Counselors) or NAADAC (The Association for Addiction Professionals). SACAVA (Substance Abuse Certification Alliance of Virginia) oversees certification for the CAC, CCS, CPP, and CCJP, and requires 40 hours of SACAVA approved education every two years. The Board of Counseling oversees the issuance of the LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) license. 20 hours of Board approved courses are required for each annual renewal cycle.
